Best Festivals for Short Films

Wondering which festivals you'd all recommend. There are like hundreds of them and its overwhelming and cannot afford to submit to all of them. Where is money best spent?

This is a very difficult question.

Is it a feature? short? Doc? Is there a specific niche? like mental health issues or horror? Are you established? have someone famous in your film?

On my decc14 blog post, I have the generally recognized festivals and their deadlines :http://www.writersandfilmmakers.com/portal/blog.html

Need more details to help ya.

The top 10 festivals are all amazing if you can get in. But if you didn't use unions, your chances are super slim (especially at tiff.)

Go to Filmfreeway and register your film. Free

Use their tool to find festivals accepting shorts at fees from $0 to $5.

Apply to all of those that you think you have a chance at. New festivals might be one strategy.

Write a cover letter. You can use the same one for each festival.

I agree that festivals you can get to are much more fun, but of the 10 my 2 films have screened at, I only made 3. Telling folks you had a film shown in Seoul/Bilbao/Brooklyn/Guam/Minsk is pretty cool even if you can't go.

Apply to LOTS of festivals. Make it a hobby.

Good luck!
