New to visual effects and CGI

Hey im a filmer and I like see stuff blow up.
See I look at movies like ditrict 9 world of apes and I wodner how the heck do thye make those monkeys withouth actually putting them there. So i masking if anyone can tell me how to do it and what program I need to do it with. Mind you I have Adobe After Effects CC so if theres is anything that will make me put models in the scene that would be great.

There is a lot involved. If I were you, I'd start looking at all of the BTS of films and TV shows in your DVD collection because there are some valuable demonstrations of the many ways and techniques used to create special effects for movies. Not all of it is done in post. There are on set special effects, makeup effects, and pyros used as well.
