What makes Game Of Thrones episode 1 worth watching?

First I read half of the script and then watched half of the show. What is there in that first half that anyone should say "hey that was good!" "hey that was new!". IMO there was nothing. When the author can invent anything and make anything happen in that first half why make about boring characters (that didnt say or do anything original) and random blue eyed predator characters in the Forrest?

Why would anyone not change the channel within the first 30 minutes? There is not 1 thing that was new or original in those first 30 minutes.

Was it just the books that carried this show to fame? Someone told me that they thought this show had one of the best twists in film making history but there's nothing to interest me in staying that long.

Why wouldn't they use those first 30 minutes to really show something interesting other than random predator monsters in the Forrest?

I know ppl might say "you didnt even watch the entire episode"

But isnt writing 101 to not have the audience get bored or want to change the channel within those 30 minutes?

what do you think, am I just being a jelly belly?

or is the reason everyone thinks its good is because *HOLDS UP BEER* YEAHHHH NAKED CHICKS!!!

I missed the first episode when it aired, but I liked the rest: like a game of chess all pieces move into positions. Some acts show character, some show backstory, some give a foresight of drama to come :-p

It has an established audience due to the book series and (if I'm not mistaken) HBO's largest investment in a TV series. It didn't have to prove itself in the first half episode.

If it isn't your thing, it isn't your thing. It's not your typical show. It's not porn, it's HBO.

just the boobs that carried this show to fame?

There... I fixed it and simultaneously answered your question :)

Other than that, I can't see why it's so popular. If you're a fan of Lord of the Rings or other fantasy stories, don't expect this to be like those. It's more like a soap opera in a fantasy setting (a fantasy setting with barely any fantasy)

That's just not true though. It's more like The Wire in a medieval setting (the fantasy elements are virtually non-existent in the first season).

For the record, I had never read a single GoT book, and I had avoided watching the series for years as it looked to be the same sort of fantasy tedium that the LotR films became. I had no preconceptions, the publicity had completely passed me by, and I only started watching because all the other shows I was watching were on break, and I thought I should give it a chance to confirm it was as bad as I expected.

In actual fact, it's a taut political drama, a tense and frequently tragic family drama and a thrilling war drama rolled into one excellently written, well-plotted, beautifully realised and very well-acted TV show. With dragons! And boobs!

It's not perfect, but it is up there with very best TV dramas to emerge from the 'Golden Age'. S01E01 had me gripped from the very start, and I'm amazed that anyone could find it boring.

I keep meaning to give it a try since I'm pretty sure it's the kind of show I'd really enjoy. But like you, I couldn't finish the first episode. It didn't help that the episode was longer than average.

I understand the need for set-up, especially with the long story arcs that these shows have sometimes. But it does turn off a lot of people when a show has a learning curve, so-to-speak. One of these days I still plan on forcing myself to sit through the first couple episodes so I can figure out who everyone is and what's going on, and then start enjoying it.

I watched and liked the first season. I wasn't bored in the first 30 minutes
so the ol' saying "don't bore your audience" was true in my case. Because
not everyone is exactly the same what bores you didn't bore me - or many
others. You aren't being a jelly belly - you have different tastes than others.
That's just fine.

I didn't change the channel in the first 30 minutes because I found those 30
minutes fascinating. I agree with you; there was nothing new or original but
I was interested enough to keep watching. But I stopped a couple of episodes
into season two because I got bored.

Personal taste is a funny thing, isn't it? Two of my close friends LOVE the show.
I can see why people love it even though I don't.

If you watch the first couple of seasons on HBO GO it has a pop-up video type thing that will tell you the characters names and a picture of any character that's being talked about. It's the hardest show to follow that I've ever seen.

they'll introduce a character, and then 4 months later on another continent they'll have a conversation about that character and you're supposed to recall the name to understand the dialogue.

This^.

Like Rik said, it's just not your thing. That's all.

The first 30 minutes really hooked me. I was really intrigued by the blue-eyed predator things in the woods. And what is new and original in the world, anyway? But, in point of fact, how isn't GoT new and original...as things go? Can you name a previous TV show that it clones? Not one is popping into my head at the moment. GoT is no more guilty of doing what's already been done before through millennia of human storytelling than anyone else is, as far as I can figure.

And one thing that seems quite original to me is the fact that [series and Season 3 spoiler ahead]
they have no qualms about killing off major characters. What other show does that quite like GoT does? And the example of that at the end of Season 3 left me stunned and begging for more GoT!, as terrible of a thing as that was
. But ohhhh the dramatic impact! (I'm only through Season 3. Waiting for 4 to be released on Blu-ray.)

Yes, it's soap opera-y. But a lot of us like soap opera. Really, how can such a show that's to carry on for multiple seasons not be? I mean, you need characters. You need emotions. You need relationships. You need entanglements of relationships. You need development of characters and their entangled relationships. How is all that not interesting? How is all that not required to carry such a show?

And naked chicks help.

Yes, if you have something against eroticisized nudity or "soft porn" in your TV shows or movies, then GoT is not for you. Don't watch it. Leave it to the rest of us who don't, thank you very much.

=)

Go watch the first five minutes of a movie, then do a review.
I mean, man, if you couldn't make it through the first episode that's fine, but what are you doing bitching on the internet about it?

I thought episode 1 is the most boring of all the episodes in the series. It's more fun when you get to see star actors do their thing together.

I was excited about the show because I read the first book, and was curious how it would play out. The skin was a bonus, I guess. Well, that, plus I occasionally see the author around town and at conventions.

HBO used a lot of nudity in Rome, but the characters were also incredibly deep.
