Need traveling advice--airline rules

Hello,
I am about to embark on a doc shoot overseas and want to carry on all my essential equipment. This includes a redrock eyespye (with rods), travel tripod, batteries, microphones (including wireless). I am concerned that the airline (which does not have an info source on this other than a website advisory) will freak out over the transmitters or carbon fiber rods and force me to check the equipment at the last minute and it will disappear (the country I am traveling to is notirious for "losing" expensive luggage--or I would check it.).

Has anyone had experience traveling with these items overseas? Please advise.

Thank you!

well so far... i have put my tripods in my checked baggage... but kept my cameras and laptops in a backpack... i even once had a buddy flying with me carry another camera bag threw the terminal so he could use it as his bag and i didnt have to check anything...

you can also pay for insurance... which of course wont help ya right away if its missing... but it could help ya in the long run
