Should we have a micro 4/3 thread?

Panasonic GH2 and AF-100

Discuss? :D

GH2 video samples for your viewing pleasure. There are some stills in a couple of them.

Not sure what is causing the pulsating light in the last one. The first two are pretty sweet. I'm impressed at out the shutter captures the motion of the wake of the boat. Actually seriously considering one of these despite the slightly smaller sensor compared with APS-C found in the Canon cameras. Yes the Mpixel count is also lower, but the down-sampled compression has (in my opinion) superior image quality to the line skipped compression that Canon is using. The GH2 looks to have a superior color quality to the GH1, although maybe not quite as "already pretty" looking as the Canon lineup. Still, I'm pretty impressed with what I saw in the first two vids.

$900-1500, essentially t2i/550d price range, maybe a bit higher for the 14-140 lens.

This is the big brother, the AF-100.

Which maybe I, or someone else, has posted here before? Anyway. Like I mentioned in a different thread, not ready nor can afford something of this level - but with the features listed at $5K it's really appealing.

I like the idea of this format, just about any lens type can be used - so all my FD stuff and maybe even some of my c mount lenses as well can come into play. There's something cool about the image quality of old glass, even with the crop factor (2x for the FD mount glass) or vignetting (the 16mm c mount stuff) I'm into the idea.

So, what do folks think? One review I read commented that m4/3 could become the "super 16" of the HD cinema world. I also kinda like that idea. Is the sensor just plain too small for the format to catch on with the folks who sign the checks?

Interesting. If that can be repeated in multiple cameras, then there's a pretty big problem.

I wonder though, as there is bound to be some level of variation on aftermarket mounts I wonder if it would have been worth using the same lens and several different adapter rings and checking if the results change or not.

Also interested to hear if this little 'feature' has anything to do with delayed GH2s ...

... aaaand ordered. Body only from Panasonic direct.

As of a couple hours ago.

Well, back-ordered. Panasonic claims they will send me an email weekly with updates on when it might arrive.

I know ... not terribly exciting news. :D

wheat is waiting for his, as well.

This can't be normal. Is it? When I bought my T2i, it was out of stock almost everywhere. Is it normal for new models of photography cameras to be in such high-demand when they are released?

My intuition tells me this is a new phenomenon, driven by all the filmmakers buying up these cameras that were not conceived with us in mind. We weren't part of their strategy.

This can only lead to them finally building the cameras we want, and not the camera we're settling for.

One can only hope. You might find it interesting that towards the end I decided that in the grand scheme of GH2 vs. tXi/60D it's about a wash. There are problems with both codecs and with both image processing engines. It's crop versus line skipping. Pick your poison. ;) There are other pros and cons too, but that's the short version.

I read recently that the GH2 will roll and roll and roll and span the mts files like a good little obedient device. Normally I would eschew DSLR for doc work, but in this instance I see an opportunity. In combination with longer focal lengths on what is effectively a 16mm crop in a very small and lightweight package - should be interesting for some of the things I want to do.

I got my GH2 (body only) delivered on December 23rd from Panasnic Direct. Of course, I had ordered it a few weeks prior...

Mind if I ask your plans on lenses? I'm still looking for something that I can use as a basic photographic zoom and for experimentation before I start dropping lots of money on primes. I'm considering the Zuiko 14-54 f2.8/3.5. Probably add something longer later. I liked the idea of the 14-140 from Panny, but ~$800 is just way too much to drop on a lens that slow for a camera with so many adapter options.

I have a handful of FD and C-mount stuff I plan on using. The C-mount that I have will likely vignette heavily, so I plan to use them for photography for the time being. (what can I say, I like the square aspect ratio in stills :P).

I'll definitely pick up more primes as well for video projects, but I still want to give myself a 'kit' lens option for general use, scouting, and just getting the ball rolling without obsessing over what I can't afford. :)

I'm also fortunate in that for the time being there are a couple of audio recorders available for my periodic use. :D
