Pre amps and Mic question

Hi guys, I'm somewhat new to the audio world and want to learn more. In my research I have always heard that your preamps from your recorder is very important when choosing a mic. I was wondering if someone had a link or wouldn't mind explaining what one should look for in a preamp inside a recorder?

What is a preamp?

What to look for in a recoder's preamp?

And any other info would be appreciated. Thank you.

Low noise, smooth controllable gain, neutral coloration.

You want great mic pres for production sound? Go with Sound Devices. Beyond your budget? Look into Tascam products.
