48/24 vs 48/16

Thinking about this, I'm just wondering if 48/24 is more useful in a noisier environment. Everything else being equal, will 48/24 give me more headroom due to issues with loud stuff screaming by?

Theoretically but in practice it depends on the dynamic range of your recorder, mic and pre-amp. As a general rule of thumb, leave your recorder set on 48/24. Exactly where you want your average levels to be is a function of the dynamic range of your recording chain but if you've got half decent equipment, say the cheaper end of the pro scale, then you'll probably be fine leaving yourself 10dB of headroom.

Thanks, great advice.
