using a digital s.l.r as a light meter for 16mm film...

hi, i have done a fair amount of shooting 16 mm film in the last three years at school.
recently i was told by someone that i could use a digital slr [if set to the same iso, shutter, and f stop]
to achieve a 'pre-view' of what the lighting looks like. i tried it a couple times but im unsure of the accuracy results...

are there any variables other then the lens that im not thinking of?

i.e the shutter angle effecting the shutter speed: is it still a 25th of a second?
