Professor Marston & the Wonder Women

I wanted to get you guy's thoughts on this movie. Professor Marston & the Wonder Women is about the creator of Wonder woman but according to Christie Marston (great granddaughter), the film is "total BS". If you guys haven't seen the trailer check it out here http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi2915809561/

It's listed as a biography but none of the family was interviewed or even asked about his life during the making of this movie. I just can't understand how this was allowed to be made.

It is allowed to be made because here in the States we have that freedom.

All "biography" movies take creative liberties. And most of the time family
members and friends do not like the results. I could list over a dozen "biopics"
that stretched the truth or even added things that never happened. I suspect
this one will be no different.

The granddaughter could have said it's not true because she's embarrassed by Marston's unusual life. I heard a segment on public radio a couple years ago & it talked about the same things shown in the trailer, as well as his support of women's causes & strong liberated women. Like directorik said, a movie will probably exaggerate & emphasize the more exciting parts of the story because it wants to get attention, but the filmmakers probably have enough proof. Otherwise, couldn't the family sue them?

Perhaps. Families have sued filmmakers in the past. But sue for what?
Artistic license? Not against the law. If the film rises to the legal level
of slander there might be a cause to sue but that's extremely difficult
and as mlesemann says it's nearly impossible to show that a movie
damaged a dead persons reputation.

It might be "B.S." according to Ms. Marston but it may not be legally
actionable. As I said, many families and friends have not likes many
biopics. Even if "based on a true story" many creative liberties are taken.

But yes, anyone can sue for anything.

Interesting. What if someone made a movie about James Dean & put in false things that made him look bad? Would that be legal?
If it was determined that what was said tarnished the reputation of
him to the point of actual damages, then the estate may win damages.
For example; this movie caused people to stop buying Dean merchandise.

Actual damages would have to be proven. As would intent.

I see. I guess it would be bad to go up against a rich estate. They could tie you up in court indefinitely while you rack up lawyer's expenses.
