Post prod & FCPX

Been playing w/ FCPX for a few days for the 1st time..(still very new) managed to edit together a few clips but still tons to learn..
Will be editing a feature on it later down the line but really need to know at what stages would you normally place each technical task ..ie
1, rough edit / edit
2. sound clean up
3. music
4 colour correction
5. format aspect ratio
etc. etc etc

I think you should know your aspect ratio before you shoot. Music may come up before as well- totally depends on the situation and how you are using music.

Edit. This includes at the very least rough sound design and could include rough graphics/retouch or VFX as well.

Finishing. When you lock the edit, have conformed to your highest quality source, I would say color. That way you can mix to your "final" picture and then after you have graded, you can work on any VFX if applicable.

Every job is different though and everyone works differently. Can't speak too concretely about how your project should work.

Each project will have its own requirements, problems and efficiencies, hence each will have a different workflow. The longer the project, the more moving parts, the more people involved, the more often you need to modify a workflow to match your needs. What you're editing makes a difference.

Take for instance, if you're doing a documentary, it'll have a very different plan of attack than a narrative film. In a documentary, your laying your Sync (not to be confused with syncing sound with video) so you can find your story will often be the earliest part from your list of steps, where in narrative, the assembly edit is usually the first step.

Workflows also alter depending on the experience and workflows of others included in the process. The less experienced the director/producers, the more temp music/sound cleanup/sfx and even basic color correction you need before you can proceed past the rough cut stage.

Knowing your destination will also help you determine your workflow. The list of deliverables required may force you to work a particular way, depending on how your software works.
