What lightning filters do I get?

Hello everyone!
This is my first post at this forum but I'll skip the background and cut right to the question.

We are a group of 5 guys doing some short films. We got 3 really great lamps and filters for making the light diffuse (sorry I have really no idea of the english terms for some of these things I am asking for). However I would like to buy some filters with different colors but, as you know, there are lots and lots of different colours. So which ones would be essential? I am talking about buying very few, as we are on a tight budget. Maybe 3 or 5 different colours.

TLDR; I want to get filters for my lamps, what 3-5 colors should I get?

Thanks alot in advance!

Well it really depends on your production design as to what colours you need.

If you're after some gels to balance the light temperature you'll need some CTBs or a roll of CTO.

For a surreal look you may want to try out some different colour gels.

Lee Filters will provide you with a sample swatch if you send off for a catalogue and mention that you'd like a swatch book in your request form.

If you're after a decent starter pack, the lee filters master location pack is great - you can get one for about £35.

Welcome affe!

Smith posted an excellent kit. As you now know, these
are called gels. A filter is what is used on the lens. Check
out Tiffen for filters.

It can't hurt to have a few sheets of half orange and full orange,
a few a few sheets of half blue and full blue, a few sheets of amber
and a few sheets of diffusion on hand at all times. Black wrap is
an essential addition to any lighting kit, too.
