Music Video Process with Labels

The director doesn't find equipment.

The production company handles everything. They hire the
director, they hire the DP and the crew. Their UPM will rent
all the equipment and stage or location.

I’m assuming iceblue is speaking about professional, fully
budgeted music videos from a big label and not an independent
label making a music video with very little money.

For the most part the people getting the behind the scenes footage
are independent of the label, production company or advertising
agency. I’ve been out of the music video scene for a long time -
it was drastically changing as I got out.

I shoot behind the scenes footage as an independent contractor. I
recently finished shooting “American Idol”. I own my camera and
UHF transmitter. But that’s it. Sometimes I’m hired to to the
whole shebang so I rent lights and hire the audio people and
crew. I assume if a record label needed behind the scenes footage
they would hire an owner/operator.

There are so many variables. The size of the label, the prodCo and
the advertising agency - I don’t think there is a general answer.

I actually was asking about more independent labels. I'm literally at the very start of this and just trying to break in, so the projects I will hopefully get are smaller labels that probably deal with it differently. The reason I ask was because I was given a budget to work in while writing a treatment, but I was confused as to how much I would get paid and wether that is a separate budget, and how would the pay be decided upon?
