Whats a location scout do?

What are some of the job duties a location scout usual takes on? I don't just recommend places do I? Do I have to talk with business owner's of places we want to shoot and secure the location? What are the common duties of a location scout and what type of supplies (pen, paper, camera, video camera, etc.) should I bring? Thanks.

Anyone can find possible locations. A location scout helps you actually get to use them. A great location scout is also able to find multiple locations in proximity to one another to help keep costs down. Normally, I expect a location scout to:

1) Find possible locations based on a list of what is needed for the production
2) Negotiate location fees & secure location releases
4) Take scouting photos or videos of the location for me
5) Work with the PM to coordinate location times/dates, etc.

I definitely expect the location scout to be the first contact with the location owner, thus it helps for the scout to be friendly, professional, and smooth. Part of their job is to "sell" the location owner on letting us use the location.
