External Audio Recording

Finished shooting a feature on the DVX using a ME66 and some lav's for audio. We ran directly into the camera and I was less that pleased with the results. Very difficult to dial in the levels where they are strong but not too hot where they would constantly peak.

For our next project we have secured some funds that will allow us to get some better gear and I am trying to figure out which direction to go.

I'm interested in both of these directions.

A field mixer with inline peak limiters and high pass filters. I would still track the audio to the DVX.

or

A digital audio recorder with peak limiters and highpass filters. We would have to be meticulous with marks and sync but I would have greater control over the overall sound.

Any thoughts on these situations? Just trying to do my homework.

I would go with something like the first one that can output a line level (as opposed to mic level) that the sound guy/boom op can maybe have on their hip or on the boom even and adjust as need be.. being able to see the levels on that unit would be a bonus too, and outputting at line level you'll get a consistant sound signal into the camera, which is always a good thing.. Additionally, it's probably got some pre-amp circuitry too which will help with the quieter audio.
