Hang 'em High

Any of you guys/gals have any suggestions on how you can hang someone, safely? Something like the hanging scene in The Shawshank. Thanks in advance guys.

I have 3 suggestions.

1) PHYSICAL RIG:

Put a fall protection harness, under the clothes.

You make separate noose for the neck, that remains loose.

2) COMPOSITING/MASK WAY:

Using After Effects. When you have the guy "hanging", use a foreground object, like a table that covers his midsection or waist.

1ST Shot: Your actor is standing on a chair and is pretending to hang.

2ND Shot: From the same angle have the actor hang from a bar and dangle his legs, so they can be scene underneath the table.

Now, composite the hanging guy (shot 1, top half) with the dangling legs (shot 2, bottom half) and use the table to cover the mask line.

3) SUGGESTIVE EDITING WAY:

You can achieve the illusion by not showing the whole length of the body in one shot. For example, a person walks into the room and the first thing they see are the feet swaying. Use a different cut for the top half of the person, with the rope around his neck. If you do need a wide shot, you can use the person walking in to block part of the frame, like whatever chair or stool the hung actor is standing on.

It might look like this:

1) The door opens and the person walks in. He looks directly at the hanged man and looks downward.

2) Tilt up from floor to swaying feet and continue tilting up the legs.

3) Person who walked in is looking at feet and raises their head to look up.

4) (Now with actor on a chair) show their waist or upper legs and tilt up to his face and up the rope.

When cut together, the illusion will be that the tilt shots are one continuous shot, interrupted by the quick cutaway to the person looking at the hanged man. Just an idea using camera movement to sew it together.

Of course, you can even put the camera behind the swaying feet and have the person enter the room in the background of the shot. You can shift (rack) the focus from the person to the feet in the foreground. This could be how the sequence starts, then go to the other shots (above).

Those are great ideas Scoopicman, obviously the first is the best if you can do it...

When some is hanged the death comes when they try and inhale and the rope crushes their windpipe. Then without air to the muscles their body relaxed and their neck breaks. Deeply unpleasant. My hypothetical idea is some sort of robust (plastic?) snood that should mean that whilst it might be a little uncomfortable, your actor hopefully won't die...
