Cutting and Shaping Light

With the mass population being sold on the idea, you don't need to light it with a high end dslr. As a student of lighting, it's becoming less of a topic hearing from others how they cut and shape light. What's your thoughts on lighting, and if you have examples of your work you would like to share? I wish I can afford more cinematography masterclasses. It's really where I do learn a lot more, when I see light being cut and shaped. Seeing all the c-stands, flags, scrims, bounce, reflectors in action. But at the moment, I'm going with the online community for their experiences on lighting.
