May I Post Serious Question About Directing Erotica? It's About This..

Hi guys and gals,

I'm new to this forum and in a way new to indie films (I've produced/directed mostly reality and unscripted documentary-type stuff) and I don't wana break any forum rules or be thought of as a troll (or whatever it's called) so I'd like to ask permission first...

May I ask some serious question/concerns about directing erotica for the first time? (Of course some members may laugh or make fun of my question/situation and that's normal and okay, as long as some people also provide some serious/helpful answers :P )

It's not my field (yet) but I have a small buyer willing to pay a small amount so if I can keep within small budget, I'll make a modest profit; so no I will not cannot turn it down (I need the money and it's not easy to find real buyers!)

Anyone here directed an erotica before?

If it's not okay, I understand and I apologize for your time. Can you recommend a forum for erotic filmmakers? I can't find it in Google.

Cheers :)

Why do you have to mention it is porn, can't you ask general filmmaking questions that already apply across the board?

Or is this about fluffing?

Lurking past of Indietalk readers is your serious concern? :)

Jokes aside though, and for the future discussions you might start with anyone about the subject, best to make yourself, and your project the first talking point, not pushing anyone to talk about themselves.

This is not to say I have anything against - I wish you luck with your project :) Feel free to ask for any assistance on the sound department.

...

I guess it doesn't exist and that most erotic filmmakers don't care about becoming better at filmmaking? ;)

Welcome to IT.

Whatever you are directing, it is about open communication.
This means any actor/actress should know what the plan/script is before entering the set so they know what is expected of them. No unpleasant surprises.
Treat is as something normal and treat the cast with respect.
The set should feel safe.
In the 'normal' filmindustry it is pretty common practise to keep the amount of crew as small as possible when shooting any nudity or 'erotic' scenes with no real nudity on screen.

I don't know if this matters or not, but from the erotica that I have seen here and there, a lot of suffers from poor writing, and badly directed sex scenes, so if I think that is what to concentrate on improving for a start.

Thanks guys, met with buyer again and I'm trying to see first if buyer would would be willing to revise the storyboard and/or marketing plan to solve my problem, waiting for approvals from their creatives, PR, etc. >.<

Will update you regardless (whether they approve and my problem is solved so I don't have to post it anymore, or if they disapprove my request and so I'd still have to deal with it and need your advice).

Cheers!

Hi guys, sorry I haven't posted coz I'm still trying to fix the problem in the backend with the buyer's PR etc and experiencing runaround with different factions involved :(

But mainly my question is, how do I make sure that my non-pro male actors/extras do not secretly enjoy themselves or have pleasure when licking up and humping my beautiful actress? Moreover, no "sock" for guys and no plaster for her, but no penetration.

My actress (with cult following here in Southeast Asia, not to be confused with South Asia) is pro, non-picky, has done lots of simulated stuff on screen, easy to direct in the sense of doesn't refuse what is required in scenes; but she's very particular about not being interrupted, doesn't like cuts, lots of people on set or other distractions; and even wants her own sensual "tantra" (or is it tantric?) music played in the background, etc. and she likes her erotic scenes to go naturally.

(coz I thought of playing comedy laughing in the background just to make it funny instead of arousing, but obviously can't do that. Read on another thread to try and make it "awkward' with lots of people or even actors' parents etc. and that's definitely a no-no for her).

Cheers

You could chop their balls off.

Seriously any heterosexual red blooded male is going to enjoy that sort of thing, it's biology. But if they're keeping it a "secret" then why do you even care? Who cares what someone is secretly thinking!!

All I care about is that they conduct themselves professionally in an existential world.

Sometimes actors have fun, that's part of the job. It's a fun job.
Jim Carrey had an absolute blast when they let him shoot a tommygun in The Mask

A. Hire pros. Of course, they heve to start somewhere but if you are working with a "pro" actress, why subject her to non-pros/first-timers on your set? THAT is unprofessional, imo, as relating to your industry.

Put it this way. When you have a "known" industry professional in town for a board meeting, do you send in your interns to talk to him/her?

Despite the delays, it seems it's pushing through.

Therein lies my problem with PR and creatives, my friend >.<

The concept is crazy but extremely clever from a PR point of view. They want to cast not pro-actors but her *real* fans "a chance to do scenes with ###!" She has a private but pretty large forum hosted by the channel where she flirts with fans who are paid subscribers of the online channel and gets all sorts of perv comments. They want to cast from this. One reason for the delays is that I was trying to negotiate for "planting" actors as fans to make it seem like the actors were chosen from among them, but it didn't fly with PR and creatives. Aside from the authenticity issue, they want to choose them based on 1) their past comment history (the more perverted the better), 2) the 'best' comments on "why should we choose you to be in the scenes with me?", and 3) the fans' looks (they're not completely anonymous because these are paying fans and their initial signup is via Facebook login), and it's linked to their channel membership which they pay for using SMS Text (they're mostly lower class people with no credit cards). Moreover, "real" actors here in Southeast Asia look very different from her lower class fanbase. Actors, my actress, and upper class people here tend to look very white (yellow) and have east asian features (kinda like Chinese, Korean), while the lower class and her fan base tend to look very rough and dark.

This series is meant to compete against Korean erotica which is taking Southeast Asia by storm, from music to dramas to erotica; and so less and less of the audience is willing to pay to watch, as there's lots of free Korean erotica online. However, the weak point of Korean erotica is that while the audience likes the east-Asian yellow-skinned gals, our audience can't identify with the Korean male actors who are also very yellow and look feminine. So we'll compete by using our own yellow gal but "real" male fans who represent her other fans who look rough and lower class. Kinda like USA theme of "rich bitch" with lower class guys concept.

@sfoster: I guess you're right, especially in this case where they're her fans. I gotta admit I have an off and on thing (non-exclusive) going with her, so I guess it may have affected my judgement. I'm not jealous of her at all with her other 'friendships' (she's what traditionalists may call sensually "progressive" in her personal life). She has a bit of a bizarre streak in the sense that despite her being very sensually progressive in her personal life with male friends, she insists that her acting is all about art and not sex (IKR, but you guys have probably encountered this with other erotic actresses too). My bad, I guess I didn't feel like letting these lower-class fans "have their way with her" in my project, and that emotion was unprofessional of me.

Ironically, my actress is super okay with all this and thinks it's a very sexy concept; and that it is a clever stunt (I agree, I think it's genius; at least from a marketing perspective).

So I guess my concern now is controlling the scenes and preventing the guys from going too far with her in going what's beyond the storyboard. Challenge, as I said earlier, is that 1) no cock socks and no plaster for her as genitals must be clearly seen before contact (it has to look as real as possible with no actual penetration happening; audience should be buzzing about how "it must've been real" and she won't confirm nor deny, to keep the buzz going), and 2) during the scenes she doesn't like cuts and wants it to run naturally, and 3) it's to be very intense like in the Korean erotica references I was made to work with (I can post link if moderator allows, but I'm not sure it would be appropriate coz this is not specifically an erotic film forum. Anyway, you can Google actress Yoon Seol-Hee in "Lies" and "Love Clinic" with Ha Ju Hee.) Our scenes will be that intensity, but with full nudity before, during, and after simulated humping and oral activity with no cuts from nudity to contact. For me, the riskiest scene we have to copy is the oral scene like with Ha Ju Hee in which she pulls the male actor's head tightly on her crotch while she thrusts, the guy can easily forget he's acting and go too far. The female persona will also copy those 2 actress' characters in those 2 films.

Basically you are putting her in danger by casting from a pool of her most perverted webcam fans (even if she agrees) AND you just admitted on the internet you knew of this danger by your concern of them going too far, which makes you accountable if anything happens beyond what your actual concerns are.

I'm sorry but this is not the right forum for your questions and also I'd rethink the entire thing.
