Aperture with Camcorder

Hi guys,
I use the Canon HG10. It's a hard disk drive based HD camcorder.
The portrait mode (automatic) and aperture mode (manual) sometimes give pretty decent footage, with a nice blurred background. However, most of the time, backgrounds aren't blurred, and with a low aperture... (or high aperture number).

I was wondering if there was a way that could ensure high aperture (blurred background), or make the subject more obvious, by blurring more of the background.

Blurring backgrounds has more to do with focus than aperture. I am not familiar with the specific camera, but it must have some sort of focus controls. Because most camcorders are so automated, they usually focus automatically at the center of the image. So if you put your subject in the middle of your frame, the camera will automatically focus on the subject and will blur your background IF the lens is long enough (zoom in for a longer lens effect). If the lens is short/wide angle, it will be harder or even impossible to blur your background.
