watch Space Invaders OFFICIAL Movie TRAILER (2015)

Did you know Warner Bros is making a Space Invaders movie? Fucking stupid, right? What do you think that would look like?

I actually failed to upload a video last week because this one took so damn long (animation + Unpredicted Render Times = delays) Also had some personal crap happen that killed the creative mood.

feedback time, fellas ;)

You need to get to the next level with your sketches, and trim the fat from otherwise great ideas. It's a very topical target to spoof, but it outstays the gags. (btw, that double glasses one was hilarious) :)

I feel like almost every shot in this video was needed to make it feel like a trailer. There's actually a lot of stuff that got cut, like a "scene" where they were building the ship to fight back against the Invaders and a shot showing my daughter (the little girl with the face paint) getting abducted. I figured this needed a lot of "serious" shots in it to sell it.

And the sunglasses joke is my favorite as well, I've had that in the arsenal for a long time, never found a use until now.

I agree with Steve that it was a little on the long side – I think that could probably be solved by speeding up the edit and just cutting a few shots that didn't have 'jokes'. But the idea was pretty good and the VFX were well executed. I'm really impressed by the consistent improvement of the animation in your videos. Some of that stuff was top notch.

You've probably seen this old College Humor video, but...

I have to disagree, I think the length is perfect.

Most movie trailers are about 2 and a half minutes, this one ends at 2:45, then the remainder of the time is the "end-card" telling people to subscribe

I'm going to have to agree with ZenSteve & NickClapper - it feels too long. As you've noted, it's not actually that long from a trailer standpoint, which suggests it's just that there's not enough going on to fill out the time - many of the individual shots themselves feel too long for a trailer.

I like the "what are they?" "They're invaders..." lines, but I feel you missed an opportunity - "but where do they come from?" "SPACE!".

Mussonman, you make some of the funniest, quirkiest and yet still high quality things on this forum, consistently. Kudos to your sir on not just this (loved the double glasses gag) but all of the work I've seen from you. Cheers!

thanks man :) one of the kindest things I've read on here :D

It didn't feel overly long to me, like some of the guys here have noted. I enjoyed it, and I think it may be the best work I've seen from you. I was very impressed by the animation, especially with the scene with the Statue of Liberty, nicely done.

There's really only one thing that bothers me, and it's in all of your videos. The text you use on screen feels very amateurish, very. It may be the font, it may be the way it is used on screen, but it feels like something out of Windows Movie Maker.

I think you may want to address that in the videos. I think it would way more professional if the titles came off a bit more like one of these: (I linked Videoblocks because I have a subscription and regularly use these sort of templates from them for that more professional look.) Especially when you're shooting for the look of a trailer.

Another example of what I mean: I just saw this on TV today. The movie looks incredibly, incredibly stupid. But, notice how the titles seem more theatrical - even just the change in font can add a lot, and make it look less 1990's Arial font, which is how yours tends to look.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57Vkp77tVTM

You had the right idea around 1:30, but again, the text looks like it came off of a math test, making it lose the mood. (Which is also how I felt about another video of yours I really otherwise enjoyed, the Fourth of July spoof.) I think font choice is incredibly important here - others may disagree, but in all the videos I watch of yours, that's really my only major critique that tends to be in all of them.

One last thing - In that series of titles around 1:30, you keep changing the text. It starts off reading like a sentence, with only the first letter being capitalized. Then it has a word in all caps followed by multiple explanation points, which looks awkward, like this has been made by a young kid. Then it goes to all of the first letters being capitalized. Keep it constant - either make it all caps, all lower, or all of the first letters being capped. Don't move it around like that, it looks awkward and amateurish. And a font change on it all would make it 10x better.

I know in the past when I've mentioned things that made it feel amateurish, you've told me that was your intent. (Wearing graphic tees in videos, for example.) But, I think there is a line between trying to look a bit amateurish, and genuinely downgrading your potentially good ideas w/ things that detract from the experience of watching your video. Especially when you mean the video to be theatrical or the like. I think the font choices/titles would make a world of difference.

In regards to the punctuation and capitalization changing, look at what they're saying. "You stupid asshole!! With your big, stupid face!"

Clearly the text (if this were a real trailer) isn't written by a professional. lol, like it's arguing with people who don't believe in aliens.

But thanks for the critique man.

That was fun to watch :)
But it can indeed be trimmed a bit.
The fairground part was slow: you could have established that with less shots (but different ones), or at a faster pace.

The double glasses could be in place of the drawn guns and the drawing of the guns could place right after or over the 'when they hit the ground'.
(Just a thought.)

Spoof trailers are a genre on it's own.
It's fun to do :)

Years ago I made this one:

Pacman would be a challenge to make a trailer for :P

I think there may be a difference between making it look amateurish on purpose, and just making it look... well, bad. Just something to keep in mind, I love your videos but have a tendency to cringe at your font/title choices.
