How do you stage a fight?

I know that title sounds idiotic and it's probably a stupid answer, but I want to get as close to realistic as possible, without legitimately fighting.

Any thoughts/ideas/experiences?

FIGHTSCENES FOR MOTION PICTURES

I have it. It's short but good. No, you don't have to train like a stuntman. The emphasis is on the fact that movies use 2D space (This is another thing that 3D will screw up!), so it shows you the proper angles to get, without putting your actor in danger.

Good editing.

And it's less about the "playing the hit" and more about "playing the getting hit."

Yes! If the guy/gal taking the hit reacts right, it will totally sell it. This is more important than the other guy actually having "moves."

Sometimes, if the angles are right, you can cut out a few frames after the impact to make your hits look faster or snappier. I'm not sure if this is a legitimate technique, or something ill-advised I picked up from Filmriot

Also, good sound, well synched, can really sell an impact.
