Fair enough, I've been looking around at different types of mic, this appears to be the only one within budget at the moment. When i get the funding to get proper equipment i will hopefully move up to a better standard one, but from what i've heard, using the on board mic is a big mistake most of the time, though apparently the onboard on the XM2 is good for getting ambient sound.

Keep in mind that the Rode VM or VMP will still be on your camera. The sound quality may be improved, but you have not resolved the issue of placement - putting a mic on the end of a boom-pole and aiming the mic properly while following the talent.

True, well I guess I'll climb that hill when I get to it, rode do sell a boom pole, that might do the job

I have this mic, i love it. Its really good. i use it on top of my DSLR. Havent tried it with a boom. Curious about that...

Yeah i've heard it's pretty good, going to get one when i can get the money, at the moment i'm going to borrow the college's mic for my short documentary.
