Stanley Kubrick was the director. Mistakes, like those listed in your links, wouldn't really be his responsibility. There would have been lots of other people on set, whose job it would have been to spot those mistakes...

Also, end of the day, the editor could've worked to remove those mistakes, but either didn't spot them or chose to leave them in, probably for the greater good of the picture. The direction of Kubrick was masterful. Perhaps the work of some of those around him was more lacking.

All films contain errors. What's critical is whether they affect the story being told. This is an area where a focus on the technical aspects of film-making can blind you to what's truly important - what you're trying to say with the film (or the scene, or the shot).

To take a more recent example, Thelma Schoonmaker said in an interview that, in the Wolf of Wall Street, the use of lots of improvisation during shooting meant there are many cuts that don't match. Scorsese chose not to care because what's going on on-screen is more important.

I believe that a lot of what are considered errors were done by Kubrick on purpose. He would research a project for a few years before filming began. For example, Barry Lyndon came out in 1975 and five years later The Shining was released in 1980. That's five years worth of research. Full Metal Jacket came out in 1987, seven years after The Shining. No other films were made by Kubrick between Barry Lyndon and The Shining, and The Shining and Full Metal Jacket, not to mention that his last film, Eyes Wide Shut came out in 1999, twelve years after FMJ!

Kubrick was obsessed with detail. He was a perfectionist. He was secretive, in a similar way to how Christopher Nolan is with his films before they're released, because he wouldn't tell everyone the full extent of his intentions, and in this way he was cunning - He would make actors do multiple takes to the point where their performances would become ridiculous, utilized to maximum effect with Jack Nicholson. Almost all the takes used in the final cut of Jack's performance were the much later takes.

Dr. Strangelove was initially going to be a serious film, adapted in the same tone as the book upon which it was based, titled Red Alert. George C Scott would do the first few takes acting as ridiculous as he could, having been told by Kubrick that these takes were only practice takes, to warm up with and then they would do the serious takes...Kubrick used all of the "practice takes" of his performance in the final cut of the film.

I agree with what Rob Ager, the person who runs the website I've just provided a link to, has identified in his analysis. I am not saying that he is 100% correct in everything he says. I agree with him because it makes sense for me. But what he says isn't meant to be taken as "this is the official explanation behind everything in The Shining" but it is interesting reading.

Kubrick's films have a dual narrative structure. The overt narrative has a covert narrative operating underneath it and between the lines. It seems to me that Kubrick did things this way so that he could incorporate hidden themes that would otherwise make studios reject his film before production began, if they were the main part of the film.

There are probably some things that are continuity errors that Kubrick hadn't intended or overlooked but I believe the majority of what are considered errors were kept in the film on purpose.

Yep. He basically said Kubrick was massively overrated, and to prove his point, provided links to some website that lists the errors in the four films I referred to.

I can only assume he saw the error of his ways!

Well even if the OP edited his original post, this whole thread inspired me to watch some special features on The Shining and 2001: A Space Odyssey dvds I own that I haven't seen for a couple of years, which then led me to watch the hour long documentary on the making of The Abyss, so I've had some informative and entertaining time, which gave me more ideas to work on.
