Saying hello

After reading this forum for a long time and always learning something, I thought I'd join.

I'm a UK based film maker and to date have completed two shorts after a career as a theatre director and acting teacher in the UK.

The first - "Curses and Sermons" - was a psychedelic Western based on the writing of Beat poet Michael McClure. It was shot on HD and ran for 15 mins. It played quite a few festivals and won Best Short Film at The 18th Berkeley Film Festival, Best Short Film - Audience Award at The Hampshire Film Festival and Best Costume Design at The LA Reel Film Festival. 2008. Shot in, amongst other places, a quarry at night, an abattoir and a green screen studio. Far too ambitious for a first short, buy hey ....

The second - "At Apollinaire's Grave" - was a homage to the nouvelle vague shot on location in Paris and based on the poetry of Allen Ginsberg. To date, it has won Best Short Film at The 20th Berkeley Film Festival and Best Featurette at The London Underground Film Festival. Again, shot on HD and runs 25 mins. 2010. Still needs tweaks, but pretty happy with this one although 25 mins is proving long for festivals.

I'm currently in post production on my third short - "One Night at The Aristo" - which is based on a short story by William S Burroughs and was shot on location in Tangier, Morocco and London. It was also shot on HD and should run about 25 mins, but I think I'm going to be in post for a while.

Over the three films I've worked with some great people. The actors have included Philip Bulcock from "Dark Knight Returns", Bill Hutchens from "Human Centipede 2", Ryan Sampson from "Doctor Who", Kasia Halpin from "Sweeney Todd".

Best film making experiences so far have included shooting in the streets of Tangier late at night avoiding prostitutes and junkies, hob nobbing at Cannes thanks to the wonder that is Short Film Corner and having Mike Peel (fx artist from "The Descent" and "Harry Potter" series) make me a 6 foot cockroach bartender. And, of course, the friends I've made along the way.

There are trailers on You Tube too. The first one at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOgH8gXuyf4 and the second at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1rfBmdMkbI

That's the intro and I look forward to learning more from this community, making some friends and hopefully contributing something too.
