Best Format(s) for Archive Footage?

Hi there,

I need to acquire some archive footage for a documentary. The owner of the master tape is suggesting that we just take the clip directly from a commercially-produced DVD that they put out which includes the footage we need and that anything else would require a studio to transfer it which would be costly.

The original was filmed for a public access show in 1969, so must be SD. I am wondering if it will be worth going ahead with the studio transferring it (and if so what format(s) would be best) or if using the DVD might be unnoticeably different, as the footage was already SD to being with? Or would the DVD compression result in a noticeable lack of quality?

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Many thanks...

it would depend on the content and how the orignal content was stored. beta sp would suck and maybe the dvd release was fixed. or the other way, the original is great quality and the dvd will look cheap and have compression issues.
you can try rippin off the dvd and see how it looks. present it to friends outside of post and see if they notice it.
