What's a gooday to find actors?

I don't have any friends in filmmaking at all. I'm hoping to go to film school soon. But till then, what's a way you guys have had luck getting actors? I know I can get friends, but they are all too shy in front of the camera, and I'm trying to find people for some convincing roles. Anyone have any suggestions?

Somebody may well have already suggested this but I'm not going to read all the posts right now - I suggest Backstage.

I've had great actors come through there for my movie in pre-production, 'Killer Eyes' (see www.KillerEyesMovie.com).
