How does Hollywood work?

when there is the talk of Hollywood, everybody approaches it as this near to impossible prize that only people of extreme ingenious talent can claim. Be 100% good and still Hollywood is not a sure thing right?
But every year we all see so many garbage movies that get produced in Hollywood, and not even they lack the standard qualities of a Hollywood good movie, they don't even sell! how is it that this junk movies CAN get produced in Hollywood, yet people of great talent or people who have dedicated their lives to cinema can't even enter the industry?! If it's about top tier quality, then what exactly justifies the publishing of these sorts of movies? If it's about money, then again, what justifies the production of these movies that don't even sell?
what are we missing here ? How does Hollywood work?

The majority of the Hollywood movies were created by independent companies and the "Hollywood" publishers buy them. So blame the writers.

A lot of times too, one junk movie is all it takes to ruin your career. Take Kerry Conran and his film "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow". I happened to enjoy it, but it was a box office failure and we haven't really heard from Kerry since.

Making a movie is a lot of risks and a gamble. Your production might think it's a good idea but it still fails. Humans are opinionated.

A production company like Warner brothers or Disney make not 1 movie... the make 20. What the have to do is make more money than loosing it. So 1 failure is not that bad if you have 9 that are winners. Even if something is a good movie, the production company cant always know how to sell it. The pixel movie was not a good movie...but it was a good movie for marketing.... . Annihilation is a wonderful movie but how do you market this one? How does Hollywood work? Make more money than you loose.

The more movies they produce, the more money they will get, even if some fail. Also when they fail, they still make some money.

It seems like you are taking statements out of the festival thread and reacting here. As in, winning a fest is no guaranteed way to make it in Hollywood (paraphrased) but you are adding in things like "extreme ingenious" "quality" and "100% good" which no one said.

Make a project you are passionate about, and have ambition. You take it as far as you can take it. You can do fests, and you can do the net. These days, going viral is one way to grab attention. If you have ambition, you will figure it out.

Right.

The screenwriter William Goldman said it best in his 1982 book,
“Adventures In The Screen Trade” - “Nobody knows anything”.

That doesn't mean people are stupid, it means no one KNOWS
for sure what an audience will like. So “Hollywood” execs made
decisions based on many things. And not every “Hollywood” exec
is flawless.

Quality wants to blame the writers. Too simple. Writers write
great scripts and they write terrible scripts. Only the people with
the power and money can decide what movie gets made. And
all people make mistakes.

pedramyz, most decisions made in “Hollywood” are financial.
Will people pay to watch this movie? And (again) nobody really
knows so terrible movie are made. You may have a terrific script
but if “Hollywood” thinks it will not attract top talent that script
will not sell. If you write a script that will attract top talent
(producer, director, actor) it will sell. Some (like Quality) may
think it's terrible and blame you, the writer, and it may not find
an audience. Why? Because nobody knows.

But it might be very popular and people (like Quality) will still
think it's terrible and blame the writer. However, you (the writer)
will get another shot and maybe even an opportunity to direct.

How does Hollywood work?
"Hollywood" is people. People take chances. Some try for the sure
thing and fail. Some try for the long shot and fail. As a beginner
trying to make a name for yourself you need to show you can write
a script a Hollywood exec likes. Or make a movie that a Hollywood
exec likes. It isn't always about quality – most of the time it's about
personal relationships and guessing.

People think that they need to be distributed by a Hollywood company to be a filmmaker. You don't need Hollywood. You can be a filmmaker all on your own. Start a company or join another independent company. If they want to buy your film from a festival then so be it. But don't rely on them. Just do your thing.

I wouldn't necessarily agree with Hollywood is impossible to get into unless they are people of extreme ingenious talent. But some of the questions you have raised, I have asked those questions to myself quite a few times. It's not just Hollywood, it's everywhere. Not every talented and hard working people are successful, and not every successful people are talented and hard working. World is never fair. Irrespective of that, we have to keep doing our job.

It's not enough to have passion you must have ambition. Passion is your love and devotion to the product but that does nothing to get it out there. Ambition is your relentless drive, and breaking through closed doors, and sleeplessness until you have achieved your goal.

I'm really bad at the latter part.

Nobody makes a movie thinking that it will lose money and be terrible film

The justification for making these "Garbage" movies is nothing more than miscalculating demographic size and/or interest. Sometimes the blame falls to the marketing team.

Every Hollywood movie sells enough to get back the production cost and make a big profit. There are many kids and "bad audience", as I , with great pleasure, like to call some people, who watch these garbage and believe they are good movies. I've seen good Hollywood directors calling hunger games, witch is a mediocre movie, as a great surprise, so... All Hollywood movies follow a specific format, witch is a guarantee sell since the age of Noah.

There are many forms of "success" in Hollywood, and it doesn't even have to be Hollywood for you to be "successful"! It could be some other city.

And you don't have to be a director to be "successful".

I have no desire at all to direct, I'm a sound recording! My definition of "success" it to make a good solid healthy income to raise a family on, and be managing sound departments (or more than just one person!) which are capturing great sound for the production.

Don't become an accountant please. :P

When you invest 10 dollars on a movie and it 'makes' 5. The Return on Investment is negative: it is a loss of 5 dollar. So failing is not making money. Just the amount of lost money can differ.

It is impossible to survive by making more money losing movies.

As an employee on a film set: yes: you make more money when you work on more movies if all movies hire someone for the same amount of time for the same amount of money. The employees are not the real stakeholders. Although a studio going out of business can mean they don't get their money. (Not sure what part unions can play in this scenario.)

But 9 failures means that the 10th movie needs to make up for the other losses AND make even more to make a profit.
