Business Question

Help!

I have another producer interested in my series from what he's seen on my web site. He read one of my posts that I am looking for a business partner. I asked him if we can resume talks in the new year because I have to beat the clock before the new year to get all of my belongings out of storage after my apartment met with a disaster.

This guy has the same name as the creator of Tarzan for TV and film without saying his name. That producer should be long retired, if he is still alive. That is the one person I can find as I search for his resume and IMDB credits. His picture makes him look like a young father with a baby child. And, his email account is registered to a female relative with the same last name.

He is asking to see a summary. I'm assuming he wants to see an executive summary, which I don't know how to write on my own.

How should I proceed, if he is still interested in the new year when my flat is in order? I am hoping to re-shoot the model spaceship with my friend who is makes motion controlled systems for filming models maybe in a year or two when I recover from my financial setbacks.

Thoughts? I am open to suggestions.

How long will talking take up. You may come across as someone who isn't suited for the job (or even worse, someone who is a disaster and lets personal sh*t get in the way of business) if you cannot juggle something as simple as moving items in storage + talking to a potential producer. That all being said, I think you'll find that most people are compassionate for reasonable emergencies.

As for the rest, let your inner lawyer take over.

Ask questions. Do your due diligence. There's enough red flags there. If I remember right, you've been looking for a partner to finance your operation, right?

Very few people do much work over the xmas break so waiting until after new year has passed would be fine in books of most people.

I'm looking for a partner to help me develop the production to be producable where it will be funded. There's a difference.

He replied. He is working on 2 other projects with room for one more. He said the new year will be fine.

I may as well ask him if he ever worked on the TV version of Tarzan too. Doesn't hurt to see if he is the same producer. Last year, one of the executive producers of the Andromeda TV series in Canada asked to see the series bible and pilot script. She turned it down. But, it's been revised since then.

Ok, so you're really looking for a producer to develop the packaging, attaching the right people so the project can get financing?

As far as I can remember, the executive summary is a summary of your key team members (in business, this would be the executive team) and why they're the right choice for the project. It includes their role and their experience.

As this article suggests, it may be a summary of your business plan:

Films tend to have different business plans to typical businesses.

It's amazing how much google can answer questions. Whether this is what s/he means is another question.

You've always had great ambition Mike, but I'd recommend sitting down with this guy before you shoot anything more. If he's serious, and you can put together some sort of financing, then you'll have the opportunity to bring in specialists for the visual effects. But if it's a serious offer let it be on the strength of what you've already shot, rather than pushing yourself to produce more.

And I agree with the others – if he wants to meet before Christmas (which seems increasingly unlikely) then go get a coffee with him. It might only take an hour or two. Either way, you're not going to be moving stuff from your apartment every hour of every day for the next month, and you don't want to let a potential opportunity slip through your fingers.

But, as I said, I don't know how to write an executive summary, if that is what he is looking for.

You may not need an executive summary. Sit down with the
guy and talk. Let him tell you want he is thinking. Tell him
what you're thinking. If he tells you he wants an executive
summary be honest with him and tell him you don't know
how to write an executive summary and you are looking for
a business partner who can help with that.

You seem a little star struck about the Tarzan TV series. My
suggestion is to drop that aspect and focus on building a
professional relationship with him. If he's the creator of the
TV series it'll come out at some point.

We had an email conversation last night. I was right to be suspicious. He is not the same guy behind the Tarzan TV series. He just has the same name and his is a part-time producer with another day job. He also lives in Australia. We may do a Skype meeting in January after New Years. He likes what he is hearing with the ideas for the movie, the story, and characters.

Let's see where this leads. He would love to make a film that gets picked up by a TV network. And, that's the latest. I have to keep moving things out of storage or lose the or get hit with a whole month's extra rent. So, I have to put time into getting my stuff out.
