music video budget...

A little question to those experienced in music videos... How does the budget work?

Let's say there is a band with £1000 (or $1000) for small music video, and that is the budget for the music video... Does that budget include director/video maker's and editor's fees? or is that 1000 only for video (props, locations etc...) or is it like 1000 for the music video and the rest is for "you/the director"?

How do directors/video makers charge?

A budget includes everything. If a band approaches with $x, that then needs to cover any equipment rental, catering, fees, locations, as well as fees for the crew, both production and post crew.

The budget will definitely cover the pay of the director & editor, and also the video equipment needed for the shoot. The rest will be agreed upon - hopefully in excruciating detail - in the contract.

For instance, the band may have a PA and/or monitor system that could be used for playback. That saves a few rental £/$. However, will the band have to pay their roadies (if any) to set it up & break it down, and will that come out of the budget or the bands pockets? The same with the bands lighting - if any. Is the band paying for food and transportation or does that come out of the budget? And dozens of other items that will impact the budget. In essence the contract delineates the logistical preproduction as well as responsibilities and deadlines.

The biggest thing to determine is what you want to get out of all this; do you want to make as much money as you can, or do you want to spend the whole budget to make a "reel" piece that will impress people? Or any of the thousands of shades of grey in-between.
