This is the investigation, analysis, and dissection of the top youtube content providers defined by those with the most subscribers.
http://www.indietalk.com/showthread.php?t=44191

The intent is that by understanding what elements go into the concept, design, execution, and promotion of market valued content that we ourselves may adopt some of these practices in developing our own content.

Why would we want to do that?
Why would we even care?

For my own reason -
From the light research I've conducted in crowdsourcing at the beginning of the filmmaking process and the marketing and promotion of the completed film products the key is to come to the table having already cultivated a following.
> Cold calling for fi$cal attention is grossly ineffective.
> Bring an interested crowd to your crowdsourcing campaign.
> Bring an interested crowd to marketing and promoting your finished film.

I would like to see some of the reasons others here at IT are interested in top youtube content providers.
Zen Steve?
Lucky Hardwood?
Icba Pictures?
Paul Griffith?
Any one else?

This looks waaaaaay more complicated than just hanging out your shingle and hassling your family, friends, and forum friends to watch and subscibe.

Getting a little off the path with this one: http://videoproductiontips.com/equipment-needed-to-set-up-a-simple-video-studio/

ICBA, that link is giving me a bad address.
Lettuce try this'n: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2cXupRE-FY

Thanks Ray, removed the bad one.

Also...
We probably ought to start a different thread for Social Brain Wave, right?
Since this has become the de facto thread to post update for SBW events, and we're looking forward to MORE material in upcoming weeks, there needs to be a place to post relevant material other than on a thread titled "> Examination: YouTube Top Content Providers."

I agree, I felt bad for posting video links so started posting solo stuff on the promotion part of IT, sorry to any and all that might be or get offended...

It has become quite a task to learn all these new skill-sets... I thought it was going to be a challenge learning film and audio skills, this other stuff just adds to the fun.
:D

I like it so far. The Featured channels look really good that big, but I am wondering if we would not be better off putting the Featured Channels on the side and everyone just created a playlist for the bottom.

I just created the best of Lyndick play list. Will add films to it soon.

Exclusive SOCIAL BRAIN WAVE Thread Begun

In case you didn't see it on the main forum page: http://www.indietalk.com/showthread.php?t=45371

I hope it's Kosher. :)

I upload music every week as I have for a year, I just don't post it here. :)
I made this one for the new year: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SH4XPRrGoB4 Liked it!

If you want me to make you a short list of tracks to put into one of your playlists then I can do that. All you'd have to do is click "add video via URL", it's that simple, though I'm sure you know that already, sorry. I'm enjoying learning all of these things. Thanks.

As an side, but relevant related subject, are all of you good on how to make annotations to your videos? Especially to the channel "Subscribe" link?

As for the marketing side of things, have you all "liked" our Facebook page? https://www.facebook.com/SocialBrainWave
We only have 7 right now so I expect some of you aren't on there yet. This morning it's up to 9, and it seems there's only a handful of us chatting there.
Maybe we're just unfashionably early. ;)

Also, once we're up and running, you guys should send me videos you want me to link on the Facebook page every now and then. I'm posting what I got there.

We shouldn't advertise SBW for now, I think, we don't have any solid content on the YT channel and we don't have any regular contributors either. Agreed.

I plan on making a new tutorial every fortnight for the SBW channel with in-depth versions for my own channel. If people want basics they can watch just SBW, if they want explanations and exercises I'll provide those on mine. I think we could consider a SBW Tutorials section, as I and others are also planning on making tutes.

Anyone have any experience with CamStudio? http://camstudio.org/

WRT promoting SBW - I think we get through the kinks, get some content posted, and then actively promote.
Definitely the plan.

:D LOL! Fo sho!
I'm having to figure out all sorts of funky stuff beyond strict filmmaker stuff - and all of it's relevant.
I can't really say any of it doesn't benefit me.
All of us working together to share our school of hard knocks experiences is going to make us all better, which is of course the point and purpose of this collaborative venture.

GL, everyone!

I dunno if this link'll work.
It's supposed to automagically dump a PDF onto your computer, a pre-set which I personally dislike immensely, so don't click the link if you don't want a PDF download.

How to Achieve 15 Minutes (or More) of Fame through YouTube
Liz Lavaveshkul
LizLavaveshkul@rocketmail.com

Abstract. YouTube is a video sharing website where people can upload, share, view, and
comment on originally created videos. It is an arena where ordinary people with little or no
funding can compete with mega corporations on an even playing field to achieve higher
viewership and a loyal following. This article takes a look at how a group of amateurs rose from
obscurity to become YouTube sensations with literally millions of fans and substantial earnings.
Using these YouTubers’ roadmap to success, this article lists practical suggestions for launching a
successful YouTube career.

It meanderingly covers some/much of the same information I've been covering, just presented in a different way.

I haven't applied the eye of Sauron to it just yet, but will... eventually.

Just thought I'd share first.

And where'd Steve (...) get off to?

Took some time to organise some things, after the thread jumped tracks and went straight into production mode.

Here's what I'm going to be doing. Taking advantage of the licensed movie collectibles I carry (the vinyl, in particular), a Robot Chicken-eque series of superhero & other popular movie-related shorts. This serves as a platform to highlight actual products for sale, product placement & brand awareness, easy vertical integration access, film-related portfolio building, and a few other things that quite similarly relate to selling physical products on top of an entertaining series.

I'm still working out many details, and I coincidentally happen to be expanding my line of products... which is two-fold convenient. I hope I'm onto something.

I kind of stopped reading after page 9 or 10, so I'm a little lost on exactly what has been going on. But, I've collected that at first videos were being analyzed, and there's on going analysis. Then individuals made channels that all linked to a central channel(don't really get this). And on the page before this I see two nature videos that don't look like they'll be a hit any time soon. I saw the summary on page 11(for my fellow Akronite -- maybe him and I could collaborate at some point), but I feel like there's more that has happened since then. A quick update of the whole shebang would be awesome.

I currently have my most recent channel that I use now with ~36k views, 22 videos, and 11 subscribers. The bulk of the views are on two how-to videos with my car. And I'll be putting up more soon(and getting paid roughly $500 to make about 12 how-tos). Then I have anywhere from 50-1000 views on videos on varying content.

I'm looking to create a new channel within the next week or two that I hope(and I honestly think there's potential) will catch on and be a small hit. I'll be creating a separate thread for that as I don't wanna clutter this thread or post with all the details/ideas I have thus far.

Don't need to make a new thread.
We already have one for info not germane to "Examination: YouTube Top Content Providers": http://www.indietalk.com/showthread.php?t=45371

My preliminary plans for the new channel

Premise:
I was pondering ideas for a simple, no/low-cost budget production that
can have at least a weekly video posted. I've pondered this in the past, but with nothing that struck me.
This time I was instantly struck with the idea to make quick, short movie reviews.
From that I figured 24 seconds be a nice short length(and it relates to 24FPS!).
With that, I had decided that this was my best shot at being successful, and here I am now.

Channel Title:
24 Seconds Per Review

Youtube Username:
24SecondsPerReview

Abstract:
Provide a weekly video giving a 24 second review of a movie.

Avatar/Logo:

Debating whether I should jam everything into 24 seconds, or have a little time to just ramble and introduce the movie before I dive into the review.
I'm currently leaning towards the latter as it would allow me to communicate non-review related content/updates to viewers and
allow me to present it more professionally and not just hit the ground running and come to an abrupt end with no other content.

I plan on shooting, editing, and posting all in one day; this would happen Tuesday or Thursday(I don't have class these days).
I may bump it up to two review pers week(Tu and Th) if/once I get an established viewer base.
Review quality will not be top notch at first. It will take me a while to polish up the review content and quality.

I hope to shoot my first video next week. Between now and my first shoot, I'm gonna continue brainstorming and planning.
As well as those, I'll be doing some reading. It won't hurt to read some short reviews and long reviews,
and even a how-to review a movie if such a thing exists.

You know it's been said that having one channel per idea is a bad idea. The best way to proceed is to have everything under one roof, that way people are more likely to stick around for the long haul, and watch more of your diverse content on the strength of what they came to watch in the first place.

Jump cuts seem to be the rage and can shorten a 45 second review by eliminating pauses, LOL.
