I should have put that in context: for cable network lifestyle programming, pilots are no longer the standard. Most cable networks won't even take an unsolicited submission anymore, so shooting a pilot thinking that you're going to sell it to A&E, TLC, Tavel Channel, or whatever, when they haven't specifically asked for it is an almost guaranteed waste of time and money.
