Canon 50mm f1.8 - focus issue

Hi

I bought the nifty fifty 50mm f1.8 recently. The lens is not bad, very sharp etc. For video it's great because I focus manually.
The problem is taking photos with it AF... it allways misses focus, even in daylight and with contrasty subjects.
Googling I found that this is a common issue with these lenses, but those complaining say their lenses miss focus by 8mm or 15mm (0.3/0.4 inches), and mine misses by about 30cm (12 inches), and I find it a lot. Is this normal even for a nifty fifty? For instance if I focus on the eye of someone sitting at a table, the whole face is out of focus and the plate/glass in the table is in focus. This happens no matter the aperture, but of course is more pronounced at 1.8...

Is this "normal" for this lens or is it worse than normal?

Do two tests which should help narrow down the problem.

First, use manual focus to take several shots of the same scene with different focus points to see if it does it correctly.

Second, use single point focus (not multi point focus with central point aimed somewhere) to take those shots again using AF.

Post results.
