best format/bitrate to convert AVCHD to?

i have a good laptop and film in AVCHD on my sony camcorder. i convert the files to windows media video 9000kbps to manage in adobe premiere (because it won't take the originals and takes ages to render edits even with these 9000kbps wmv files even). is this ok?

i'm using AVS video convertor.

Premiere doesn't support AVCHD? What version are you running?

I've been slinging around DSLR footage at a minimum of 45Mbits/sec with no trouble in Premiere Pro CS5.5. (Although, that is on a 12-core monster of a machine...)
