Insuring a Short Film

Hello all,

I am producing a short film for a friend, it's my first time doing anything like this, which means I'm learning on the fly. As the date of the shoot looms close (second weekend of May), I am feeling the need for some advice and have therefore signed up here.

Currently, the major obstacle to our production is the need for insurance.

I was wondering if anyone had any advice regarding insuring a short (2 weekends max) shoot?

I have read that it usually works out almost as expensive to insure for a short period as it does to pay a years premium. So far I have been quoted £750 plus 5% Insurance Premium Tax.

I really need an indication of how roughly much I should be paying, advice regarding which insurance firms to approach (is there someone who specialises in insurance for short films?).

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Randal

In LA there are companies like "the Filmmaker's Resource" (Hollywood, CA) that specialize in insuring indie films. Basically you need insurance in order to rent equipment and you sure as hell don't want to be liable if someone falls off a ladder and dies.

Insight

Randal, Im sure this may be getting to you after the fact but I can answer many questions you may have regarding the insurance industry and short films. From your previous post I see you have received a quote and honestly that premium is close to the cheapest you will find for some misc. rented equipment and general liability. If you anticipate shooting more than one or two productions within the year an annual DICE policy would be the way to go. There are definitely options out there you just want to make sure you are in touch with the right people. Having a good relationship with your agent is key, that individual is always someone you want to consult with if you ever have questions or concerns regarding the industry. Please feel free to pick my brain, I deal with production insurance daily and have a lot of experience. www.kellyinsurancegroup.com - you can find me here. Hope this finds you well.
