screens and theatres

hi all,

I checked the HCD - distribs and found this, it is very confusing.

the HCD lists for exhibitors as

total no. of screens
total no. of theatres

now, out in India, theatre is soemthing is something that has a single screen. and multiplex has more than one.

will anyone enlighten me the American jargon?

Same thing here in the States.

The theater is the building. That building could have one screen
or 25 screens. One can call a theater with many sceens a mulitplex
or a theater. According to most distributors the building that holds
the screens is called a theater.
