What I learned from The Human Centipede (spoilers)

A classic character.

I found the first movie kind of tame, but I never bothered seeing part 2, as I heard it was a lot more hardcore; going for the gore factor, including a baby killing. I'm sensitive about that kind of thing, but seeing that you liked it, I'm curious.

Wellllll, I'm not sure that I would say I liked it. :P But I don't regret seeing it, either.

I wrapped the below paragraph in spoiler tags, but I think you can read it, Scoop. I'm just talking about what you already revealed above. It's addressed to you, after all. =)

You know, I haven't even been sure that that was a baby killing until you said it was a baby killing. But yeah, there is a baby killing. But, as creepy as it might sound, it's not nearly as bad as that sounds. It's like...what the hell? Did she just kill her own baby? (There's a spoiler, sorry. But perhaps it will prepare you a bit, if you need some preparation.) But by that point in the movie it's like...just par for the course. It's all outlandish enough that I don't think you'll be traumatized. If you decide to watch 2 and it turns out I steered you wrong, then be angry at me (but not for too long!). I can take it. But I would bet you have more fortitude than I do.
;)

There is a lot of bludgeoning. I would say there's really a modest amount of gore. It's just that there are a couple of examples which are fairly stellar examples of gore. But haven't we all pretty much seen it all in all of the horror films over the decades?

At least, I don't think this quite crosses over the line into torture porn territory. Well, not quite as far as films like Hostel. I could be wrong. But if you can watch those films, I suspect you'll be okay with this one.

Thanks, Richy. Yeah, I handle the HOSTEL movies fine. I thought the second one was slickly made.

You know what was kind of a hard watch? Uwe Boll's SEED. I saw it with Uwe, at a festival that he was attending. He was actually quite fun to talk to. He admitted that SEED was his unleashed anger for the criticism that HOUSE OF THE DEAD got. Definitely some dark issues in SEED.

I was actually just discussing Seed this weekend; I haven't seen it, but I guess I should. Boll seems like an interesting character. House of the Dead certainly deserves all the criticism it got (though I enjoy watching it). He seems to be making video game movies out of spite these days.

Not sure where they'd go with a third HC movie. The first was a fun Mad Scientist movie, while the second was a dig at people who enjoyed the first (and not veiled at all). Or more specifically, if you ever looked at the IMDB comments for the first, there seemed to be a large contingent of really awful people who liked the first, but wanted it to be more exploitative. Conceptually I liked the second, though I doubt I'd want to watch it again. I think I got pretty much everything out of it the first time.

Here’s the Wikipedia page for THC3:

The Human Centipede 3 (Final Sequence)

It is set to take place in a maximum security prison, with the 500 person centipede being constructed from the prisoners. I’m taking a guess that this will be set in a world where being stitched to the human centipede is a possible sentence; armed robbery gets you 6 years on the centipede, rape gets you twelve, murder gets you life. Or perhaps the death penalty is abolished, so this is brought in to replace it?

Whatever they do with it, I like the idea of it being used to punish criminals. That’s allegedly where Tom Six got the idea from originally.

What isn’t clear is if this is going to be meta, like THC2. Does THC3 take place in a world where the other two films already exist? That remains to be seen. This one does star Dieter Laser and Laurence Harvey (Dr. Heiter and Martin, respectively), playing different characters, which is cool.

I’m quite looking forward to this.

What I learned from "The Human Centipede"

That life is too short to watch people shitting into each others mouths... (I wonder if the film was inspired by 2 girls 1 cup)

While that's what the first movie seemed to be on the face of it, when I watched it, I was surprised that it was actually a good ole "mad scientist" movie, at the core. Not only that, the actor (Dieter Laser) was the part. It was more suggestive than exploitive; the most aggressive thing was the poster used to advertise it.

Again, I haven't watched the second movie.

Oh boy. Do I dare watch SEED?
