Can I ask what constitutes a link to a "competing internet forum?"

I'm a little unclear. Noticed something recently that made me wonder.

This is pretty much the only forum that is focused on indie film making that I read, lots of other film making related things - manufacturers boards, cinematography things, steadicam things, etc. I haven't linked any even though I don't really see them as direct competition for IT in terms of traffic - more of supplemental info that IT members might find interesting or useful.

Not trying to question the policy, just wondering if I could get a better definition of what I can and can't link.

Thanks!

Haha. Now I get it. Indietalk got all frowny-faced once, when I mentioned another forum. I didn't think anything of it, cuz it's a very specialized forum, whereas indietalk.com is much more general.

So, based on my experience, I think in the eyes of the man behind the curtain, they are all competitors.

Well CF, this predates your membership by a long chunk. There were folks trying to milk the community away... and since this board runs on advertising dollars as well as memberships - keeping members on the board is a sound business philosophy.

Personally, I've got 8-9 I frequent daily, but only 3 are of this quality.

Heh. I guess I better confess and say I've found a Pro Audio board I frequent.

;)

But IT will always be my first love.

I'm Polyforamorous.

As we all are, lol.

Thanks for giving the background, but I'm still a bit in the dark. So is it really just that: no links to any forums in any way related to film making?

I don't mean "Hey check out this forum." posts, I mean specific info from threads located elsewhere (forums dedicated to certain departments, pieces of equipment, etc) that are relevant to a given discussion here. Up to this point I've avoided adding links, but had to go the long way around explaining where I got the info.

Again, not trying to make a big thing about it - but just making sure I understand the line.

Haha. I googled "polyforamorous", like an idiot, before finally getting it.

David, I think what's important is knowing what's okay to say or not, and I'm pretty sure you've got a strong grip of that.

For example, I recently recommended that one of the Indietalk regulars check out the Save the Cat forum. I did so, because he was asking a really specific question that the vast majority of Indietalk people have no clue about -- he was asking a question that was so particular, it was best to go to the forum that only talks about one thing, in extreme detail.

I don't think there's anything wrong with me doing that -- that's just good and realistic advice.

Before buying my camera, did anyone notice that I didn't ask a single stinking question on this forum? That's because I consulted the specialists. There is a forum dedicated entirely to the T2i, and it's quite active. I already knew I was gonna go DSLR, and just wanted to know more about the particulars. I didn't need to ask any questions, or even create an account, because all of my questions were answered by browsing.

What I love about Indietalk is how diverse it is. We've got screenwriting specialists, HDV camera specialists, DSLR specialists, audio specialists, newbies and veterans, people with budgets, and people without budgets -- the vast array of information being spread on this forum is unparralleled, in my opinion. That's why it's the only forum I frequent, even slightly.

That being said, I don't think it's wrong to suggest a different forum, if it's offering something entirely different -- like in-depth, super-detailed discussion of one particular subject. Just don't post a link.

The impression I get is that the policy is in place to keep advertisers from coming in and posting links. You're not an advertiser. You're not trying to steal forum memberships. To keep the issue black-and-white, don't post a link. Let people do the googling themselves. But that doesn't mean you have to pretend the other forum doesn't exist, or that you've never been there. We'll all come back.

I second everything and it's people like DDK that make me want to leave.

Stay on topic! Stay on topic! Didn't you get the warning?!

I'm looking for a little smiley-face that is freaking out like McCauley Culkin, but can't find one. Zensteve, where do you get all those from?

Hehe,

In the words of Zensteve: :mystery: :it is a mystery: :ghost: :oh I give up

By far this is one of the best boards around.

That's been my impression the whole time, but I wanted to see if there was any wiggle room. It seems though that there isn't much given what I've seen edited in various posts. Didn't see what link you posted that got vetoed, but there have been a few others that struck me as odd.

For example: if I want to suggest that people check out a thread entitled "Ask David Mullen Anything" I'll just suggest they google that exact phrase and not say where I found it.

No, I am NOT David Mullen, not even close, not even in the same universe. But for a working ASC member to offer to answer ANY question posed to him about cinematography is a damn fine resource. I've sort of wanted to link that one in the cinematography section simply because it makes for excellent reading with morning coffee, and the thread is so deep that I don't think I'll ever really finish reading it.

And who the heck is DDK, or do I even want to know?

I didn't post a link, I just talked about one, and Indietalk said, ":(". I think it was half in jest. That's what I'd like to think, anyway.

Oh.

Well FWIW I don't think I've ever made reference to anything I see as competition with indietalk, or that would draw users away from this site. I've also never been called on it either.

I was just curious to get more details on the policy in general.
