the stuff i bought wasn't bad but it only looked like money on the top bill.
the rest of it was just a stack of blank paper. not what i thought i was buying.

We made an entire case of prop money using a little Photoshop, a little paper, and a lot of green tea.

Is it illegal to use real money as a prop?

No. It's perfectly legal.

Then isn't it just easier to take a few bucks out of your pocket?

What if the plot calls for a stack of $100 bills?
What if $50,000 is needed?
What if the scene needs a suitcase filled with cash?

I read that ISS props had an issue one time by having legal currency on set. it turned into a mess and since then i think it's illegal to have real currency on set. This prop money looks really good on camera.

You can read the actual law HERE Section 504.

When making prop money one should be aware of “The Counterfeit
Detection Act of 1992”. Currency must be smaller and one sided among
other regulations.

In many cases it's better to use real currency but that can be prohibitive
if a large amount is needed on screen. Clearly no one is pulling $270,000
in $20 bills out of your pocket.

Much much easier.

But then you might look as ridiculous as danielle here at 1 minute 8 seconds.

What if you just used a couple of dozen hundred dollar bills, and put them on top of the stacks of money, so it looks like you have lot of money, but it's just a few hundred on top of stacks of blank paper?
