What's the darkest most disturbing thriller ever made?

Not disturbing in it's depiction of violence or exploitation or anything like that, but in story. For example a lot of people found Oldboy to be more disturbing than say Hostel, even though Hostel was much more violent. Me and my friends watch thrillers, but all the ones I pick for them don't excite them or hold their attention as much. I have shown them ones like, Drive, Blow Out, Hard Candy, and then finally Oldboy got their attention. Cause they found it so disturbing. They actually covered their mouths in horror while watching it.

But now they've seen that so in order to find a good pick that will hold a lot of moviegoers attention these days, I'm going to have find a movie that makes Oldboy look like Sesame Street, without being exploitative, or torture porn. Know any?

A Serbian Film is probably the most disturbing film I've ever seen, I'd never recommend anyone watches it without reading exactly what happens in it first.

Irreversible is pretty horrible too.

I know nothing about it, but a film called The Bunny Game has just been banned here in the UK. Anybody seen it?

A Serbian Film is pretty bad but does it in an arty-farty 'tell don't show' sort of way.

Not really a thriller as well. It's difficult to say but Irreversible is a pretty good shout for most disturbing as it contains some of the most visceral violence and rape ever committed to film.

I've seen Irreversible, and I guess I could show them that. It's a good movie, it's just that it feels so short storywise. Nothing wrong with that though I guess. I know of A Serbian Film, and it seems like the kind of movie most people either love or hate, so will have to check it out.

Funny Games I did not find disturbing at all. It was okay, but I've seen far more dramatic. Thanks for the other suggestions as well. United 93 I found to be pretty disturbing and wish they would make more suspense thrillers like that. But it seems that you almost have to have a movie based on a true story most of the time, in order to feel that much dread.

Ah, you might want to watch it again. It's not disturbing because of WHAT happens, but WHY it happens. These people are being tortured because you, the viewer, wanted to see it. That said, probably not as effective in a group viewing session. Audition is good, but also kinda subtle.

If you just want disturbing to watch, check out the Guinea Pig series from Japan (though more horror than thriller). And a lot more mainstream, but Requiem for a Dream is far from a feel-good movie.

Hard Candy is another one. Not the MOST - but it is up there for some.

(Not to be confused with "Candy" starring Heath Ledger; or the even more awesome "Candy" starring Ewa Aulin.)
