DIY Pan/Tilt head for my crane (W/ PIX!)

So there we were, sitting on the floor of the local hardware store (they're used to it by now) building this contraption to finish up my crane, much more useful now, cable operated pan and tilt, very cool to use, epically cool shots from it on the student films we've just finished.

It's constructed form a bunch of little metal brackets with hardened steel bolts and lock washers, 2 springs forcing it upward with a cable attached to the sled beneath to pull it downward... Left and right attached to the two top "Wings" to get the pan with a handle on the operator's end to turn the head in a direct 1 to 1 relationship. We ended up having to add 20+ pounds to the operator end to balance it (in addition to the 28 pounds we normally add).

Added really big production value - shots going form 8' up pointing down to 6" from the floor pointing up to keep the eyeline the whole time. Shots swooping over the top of a dirt pile with dirt coming over the top to reveal the digger throwing the dirt up. A low shot across the top of a coffin swooping up to a high shot overhead showing the reaction of the digger to the contents of the coffin, also in frame :)

Shown here with a DVX100b, don't like them that much, feel like they're going to fall apart, like a cheap toy, don't trust them as much for durability.

We literally sat on the floor and assembled it one piece at a time with screws and nuts from one aisle over, then brought the fully assembled piece to the check out for payment ~$45. Can't tell you the exact parts list without taking it apart, sorry.

Bottom piece hangs from the top piece providing tilt, top piece hangs from the crane providing pan.
