How much storage and how much for storage?

I started shooting not very long ago, have done a couple of shorts, music vids, a couple of interviews etc... but will be popping down to the Apple store to buy another 3 terabytes. I have around half a terabyte left but this will be eaten soon and don't even shoot in raw!

3 terabytes should last me another 3 - 6 months based on current shooting schedules.

So how much do you use and how much do you spend on this? My thoughts are to go for 3 tera of something with the words 'Porsche design' on the side as their kit is shiny, quick and easy to find in the Apple store. Naturally, I really don't know what I'm doing so just buy something that looks reputable and Porsches are fast aren't they? ;)

So how much storage do you use, what storage do you buy and most importantly what do you pay?

HDDs (Hard Disk Drives) are relatively cheap these days. The best/more reputed brands are Seagate and Western Digital but your best bet is to find online comparison sites that do benchmark tests.
Look for their read/write speed and pick the fastest in your price range.

I generally get these enclosures:

Quad inteface (~$110):

ESATA only ($49):

and then pick up whatever the best deal is on bare drives from NewEgg.com. Right now they have Seagate Barricuda 2Tb drives for $99 each:

3TB versions are only $135 each:

4TB drives are about $300 each, so it suddenly gets a lot more expensive per TB - so it looks like 3TB is the price/capacity sweet spot right now.

So a pair of drives plus enclosure gives you 6TB for between $300-$400 depending on the interface you need.

The Lacie Porsche Design 3TB is in roughly the same price range per TB, but looks like it only has USB3 as an interface. If that works for you then it's probably a decent deal as it's price-competitive with something like I've described. If you want to go bigger than 3TB then generally building your own comes out a little cheaper than retail.
