Creating a jump scare

How do you do it? What techniques do you personally use to create jumps?

Unexpected is the key. Girl looks out window for lurker. He seems to have disappeared. She begins to turn around. He is in front of her.

Now, there's ways to cut that where you will expect it. There's shots that are setups which are usually unnecessary otherwise, where you know it is coming. Happens all the time. You're watching the movie and say out loud "Watch, he's going to be in the house now." Boom. Then, there's ways to cut it so it is totally unexpected and makes you jump.

Good direction and editing. Not using filler shots to set it up (like, why are they showing her look at herself in the mirror after looking outside?). Abrupt actions. Distorting time (in other words, how did he make it in the house so fast? You jumped because you "expected" him later, if even seconds.).

Sound enhances and drives it home.
