How to: Animations to music

Hello!

I was looking for a filmmaker forum to ask a question I can't find the answer for. And I came across this site (hope I'm posting in the right category btw).

In this video:
They're visualizing all the different sounds/instruments in a very interesting way. The drums have they're own little moving circle, the chords and the leads etc. I was thinking of making something similar myself and I want to know a way to make that. I was thinking if there was a way to include the MIDI files and make them controls the behavior of the animations. Or do you know of simpler way or is it only possible to manually animate the visuals to the music?

PS. I am very new to this kind of advanced editing.

Hope you can help me.

After Effects can, with the addition of a plug-in, import MIDI tracks and use them to trigger animation. You're gonna need a way to generate the MIDI files as well.

Use those keyframes and particle generators to create some spiffy things.
