Question Making Films

Does anyone have any tips on making short films/trailers as I am looking to create some for my Portfolio?

Most probably the getting equipment - my budget isn't exactly brilliant as I'm still in college and they wouldn't fund anything.

Use what you have access to.
This way you will find out whether you really want to make those shorts.
Saves you from spending money on stuff you might never touch.
If you still like it after the first or second effort, you can look for stuff you need. And because you already made stuff you can judge much better what you are looking for in equipment.
