generic sound effects...

Such as footsteps/doors slamming/cars starting...where would someone get that? Is there someplace you download it?
Also on that note, how easy or difficult is it to dub sound in later on?

You can buy sets (I have a really nice Hollywood Edge collection that I use + Ssound track Pro comes with a bunch) or you can record your own (and start compiling them for later use as you go).

You can also get royalty-free effects from:

FreeSound.org & FlashKit.com

Sometimes it's just easier to do your own, though.

Most record stores carry a selection of special sound FX (all kinds, and usually found where you'd get your Halloween Spooky Sound CDs), but they also usually have copyright notices slathered all over them so not a good choice if you really want to stay above-board and avoid possible future issues.
