    Trying some laser effects

Okay, went on location last night and shot some more footage. It's a little too sloppy (I clearly dind't even whitebalance), but it was enough. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wRUwWUbgMY The distort helps a lot. I may go for a colder look for the beam when the aesthetic of the frame matches it...

    Trying some laser effects

Good call on the recoil. What you don't see out of frame is the entire world, blown up. I don't mess around when I build props. Good thought on the distortion too... wouldn't be too hard to do. I'll play with that. I kind of like the last one best too.

    Trying some laser effects

Hey all. So now that I've finished my props, I need to test out blast effects. I want to create an effect like a beam that has burned into your retinas, and is fading away as your eyes adjust. Of course, all I have is trusty premiere 2.0... yeah, I'm indie as hell. I threw together three...

    Building some props...

Alright, time to show off the results of my work! My methods came to this: Find things that look like what I want, mold and sculpt the plastic with a soldering gun, spray paint, sharpee. All of this in an apartment. I think I may have inhaled some bad things. Glad I'm done. The first piece was...

    Building some props...

Fantastic stuff, I will probably mod some nerf guns, maybe add metal plating... That handgun was pretty sick. Good inspiration. I'll let you know how it goes.

    Building some props...

The next short in my series is a sci-fi battle, which, hell, may never work out, but I want to give it a shot. I figure I'll keep all of the effects and props on set, and I'll just start with the weapons. If I can build one decent prop gun, then I'll make another, and then the costumes, and then...

    Flash Fiction: Ridden

Knightly, you're totally right about the knife. It should have been seen. Right before the stabbing, after he stoops to pick up the knife, there should have been a close shot of the knife in his hand, and then him stepping toward the victim. When I put these all together (all the shorts will be...

    Flash Fiction: Ridden

Website classifieds? Well, now I know! Thanks Oak. The hot lights were kind of unavoidable, being so close to headlights and not having enough fill to shutter down. I actually thought it contributed to slightly raw feeling, the harsh lighting condition. I don't know if any of these shorts will...

    Flash Fiction: Ridden

Seeing as my premiere membership expired, I guess I will post this here! You may recall my post previous about getting electricity in the woods. You might not. Whatever. This is the finished project. It took about two and a half hours to shoot, one and a half bottles of fake blood, a whole roll...

    Blender Mattes

And a moving matte. Motion tracked with Icarus, but it wasn't perfect- two noticeable bumps and some sliding. After a good bit of tweaking (and figuring out how to even tweak in the first place) I got this: Motion Matte It's not perfect, but I'm satisfied- more time would = more finesse.

    Blender Mattes

Okay, I kept the original up for comparison's sake. Original: Shadowless New: Shadowed! That might help.

    Blender Mattes

Oh yeah. I didn't put shadow on the added bit. That's a relatively easy fix, just a modification to the texture... in fact... *loads gimp.*

    Blender Mattes

Hey guys, I just wanted to show a little bit of progress I've made using Blender to add matte backgrounds. This first step was to complete a static shot with a subject moving in front. Next will be moving shots from a fixed point (on a tripod). It took some decent familiarity with Blender, so...

    Electricity in the woods

Thanks. These have been some great ideas. If I do have trouble getting the backlight rim, I'll try the second car. I should have three on set, so that should be no trouble. I'll be sure to post the results of this short when it's done. Makeup tests were supposed to be today, but got pushed back...

    Electricity in the woods

The body: Again, way too dark. Here, I was too bright. Good problem. Now we're getting closer. Post? Tada! When I actually shoot, I'll get more backlight rim on my subject. But I think this CAN be done!

    Electricity in the woods

Just for fun, here's some stills of this. Okay, two tests for my opening shot, 1 testing the dead man, 1 testing the bg subject. The bg subject: Just the headlight bounce. Just too dark and dull, but close. Filled. Better range, less dramatic. Fiddle with some colors in post... That's what I...

    Electricity in the woods

I just went out and did some level tests with my video camera, and, interestingly enough, got some kind of warning beep from my inverter within two minutes. That was with brights on and the cig output. I decided to turn my car on at that point. I figure, I'll keep another car with jumpers there...

    Electricity in the woods

I spent four hours finding that one. I live in Hartford, so you have the poor and dangerous, or the rich and clean. My find is quiet, remote, safe, and has the right aesthetic. I feel like I'll spend less effort lighting this one than trying to find another. I'll go do lighting tests tonight...

    Electricity in the woods

Generator is no go- the project isn't big enough to warrant that effort. My location isn't ACTUALLY in the woods, it's in a parking lot, but same problem. The one advantage is that, last night, I found a location with some very minor overhead lighting. I used my car's lowbeams to get some pics...

    Electricity in the woods

Hey, quick question regarding night shooting. I'm without magic wall electricity. I do have a car, and a converter for the cig outlet. What are my options here? How long till I knock out my car battery doing headlights, a 150watt on the cig, or both? I can't keep the engine running. How do you...
