Wait until you have $2000.
You'll want a big display or even two displays, software, DVD-burner, LOTS of HD space, all the RAM you can afford and plenty of processor. It's really hard to overbuy when you are editing video on a computer.
And then you'll need software.
Be sure to have a black & white monitor on the set instead of a color monitor. If you do not use a video monitor when you shoot, most cameras will let you switch the LCD on your camera from color to black & white.
