Alcove: Read blog but please help with mic advice!

Hey all, and especially Alcove, I hate to do this to you, Alcove - I feel very conscious about recycling the same question to you every few weeks in different ways, but every few weeks, I get a little closer to shooting the project, and a little closer to actually understanding what I’m doing...

    Indoor Mic: Samson C02's, anyone..?

Hi all, and especially Alcove! Dumb Question Corner again, courtesy of me. Now, if I've got this right... Shotguns for outside, Hypercardioids for inside. Can't totally remember why now, but isn't it something to do with shotguns having nodes in the waveform inside? Now - what would be the...

    External hard drive recommendations

Thanks guys - brilliant. Is Firewire 400 ok or does it need to be 800?

    External hard drive recommendations

Hi all, I need to buy an external hard drive to serve as my work horse on a project I'm editing in Premiere Elements/Preimere Pro in AVCHD format. The hard drive will have nothing else on other than movie-related files, and I'm not shooting Lord Of The Rings. What size should I aim for, and...

    Independent Filmmaking book

The Guerilla Filmmaker's Handbook is a great read - interviews with industry professionals, and everything about the filmmaking process from start to finish.

If I begin editing something in Elements, can I later import the whole project into Premiere Pro without losing anything? Cheers all

Trying to plan for edit workflow

Ah, believe me, Alcove, I'm on it - in fact most of my planning is based around your advice to me in other threads. Am going to be shooting visual tests in the next couple of weeks, and audio tests a couple of weeks after that (when the juicedlink comes!) I have every bit as much priority put...

Trying to plan for edit workflow

Around $5000, I guess. Really? Why's that? Because the camera resolution is not large enough to necessitate it? Presumably, an internal drive of 320GB is going to be ok, as long as the RPM is high enough (though I think it will be)? And the buss speed is going to be fine, as compared to...

Trying to plan for edit workflow

Hi all, Forgive my newbie questions - not that I'm ever afraid to ask! I'm trying to plan for the editing process before I start shooting my micro-budget feature. I'm increasingly thinking other people have very different definitions of micro-budget than I do. Perhaps it might be helpful...

    The Cheapest Dolly Ever

To the folks who are confused; A dolly is some sort of trolley that rolls along. Usually, but not always, it runs on tracks. A glidecam (or steadicam) is something you carry. It does not touch the ground and so you unlimited where you can go. Both should provide smooth seamless tracking shots.

    Camera confusion

I know this has been gone over before, and I don't have a weird allergy to the search button, but I wonder if I could ask for advice based on my specific project? Yesterday I finished the first draft of my script Tempus Redux. It was actually a really proud moment for me, because it's now out...

Alcove: Read blog but please help with mic advice!

Brilliant, thanks. Does the hyper-cardioid need to be cued on the boom from actor to actor from just out of shot in the same way that a shotgun would? In other words, do I use them both with exactly the same technique, just different mics..?

Alcove: Read blog but please help with mic advice!

Hi all, and esp Alcove, I need to start planning for the mics I'm buying, on a tight budget. They will be run through a Juicedlink 231, so phantom power is available. Of I've got this right from your blog, you suggest I need a shotgun for outside - was thinking of the Rode NTG1? What do you...

N00b on a microbudget - sound advice needed

Hi there, Alcove. Am just preparing to buy the JuicedLink, and I noticed there are two similar models - the CX231, and the CX211. Do you know the difference between these models? Sorry to be a nuisance. In particular, do they have identical audio quality..?

N00b on a microbudget - sound advice needed

Brilliant. Thank you. I'm nearly done, promise ;o) They're similar prices - do you have a preference of one over the other? Have nothing to go on other than your recommendation, so am happy to take your word for it. Thanks for all your help.

N00b on a microbudget - sound advice needed

That was a really useful post for me - thank you for your time. I understand what you mean about the mic pre's on the juicedlink being my best bet for signal to noise ratio - but then recording to what? Still to the camera? Or to an external device..? Forgive my further stupidity, but do I...

N00b on a microbudget - sound advice needed

So balanced inputs sound really important, but I'm presuming the camera sound in will not be balanced..? So for you, there's no real point using a field recorder of this type - you'd still record direct to the camera? Via a mixer? I suppose I'd envisaged running everything off mains power...

N00b on a microbudget - sound advice needed

Ok, so it seems the mixer isn't that big a deal or priority? Have I got that right? If the Microtrack II is worth thinking about, should I also be considering the Zoom H4 in that it has XLRs (as well as stereo mics should I choose to use them..?) and also takes the cheaper SD format. What are...
