    My First Casting Call

It would be nice, but I don't know that you'll find a lot of directors or casting directors wanting to spend time to get to know actors before an audition. Our job as actors is, in fact, to live privately, in public, and on demand. It's that "on demand" part that some directors think means no...

    Why do you do it?

Casting director Shari Rhodes once told me that we do it because it's a "disease" we're born with, and that if we don't there's a good possibility we'll become serial killers! Okay, she was joking about the serial killers thing but I agree with her point, as stated above, that it's something we...

    My First Casting Call

There's a comment early in this thread about giving actors "a few minutes" to prepare before an audition instead of sending them sides (to keep the sides from "floating around"). It's tragic that so many directors think acting is an automatic process; it isn't, and like the other processes in...

    casting directors

I'm primarily an actor, but I do a bit of shooting, too, so I helped a friend cast and shoot his short film. After two days of casting I never appreciated casting directors more in my life; it seems to me that the biggest benefit they bring to the director is the weeding out the bad actors. It...

How to speak with a British Accent?

I am frequently complimented on the quality of my British (RP) accent -- I think this comes from working with Paul Meier (www.paulmeier.com). In addition to training CDs he has a site called IDEA that contains MP3s of native speakers for one to listen to. Paul's products are very good as are...

    premiere or vegas????

If you're running a WinTel platform, Vegas can't be beat. Yes, the interface is different from other NLEs, but this makes it no less professional. In fact, where Vegas really shines -- in my opinion -- is its elegance and simplicty. Not to mention stability. I used to use Premiere, but it...

    Wire removal and background plates

The latest version of Vegas (5) has a very cool Bezier masking tool that can be used for complicated (and animated) masking. This in conjunction with chromakeying may solve your problem.

    Pirated Music in Festivals

Know that you've done the RIGHT thing and just keep doing it. I've seen the same thing happen in festivals and I believe at some point we will see the RMAA crack down on film/video festival organizers and entrants like they have with ISPs and music "sharing" (stealing) sites.

    Pirated Music in Festivals

Don't Steal Music Of course there is. How would you feel if you saw one of your videos being used without your permission, possibly to their financial benefit of the thief -- and not yours? I'm not a musician, but I have huge repect for their rights. And just because it's easy to steal...

    New Camera?!

If you're going to get a Sony and you want the best image, get a PD-170. I don't own one, but have heard nothing but good things about it.

    Digital grading

A special computer-controlled film printer is used. The same kind of printer allows companies like DVFilm.com to transfer DV projects to 35mm for projection.
