    Duke City Shootout

This is an annual film competition here in Albuquerque. 4 shoot days, 4 editing days. All scripts are screened and hand selected by committee along with the crews. The competition ended a few weeks ago. I haven't seen anything about it on this site, so I thought I'd go ahead and post about...

    Rehearsals for children

I just worked with an 8 year old for a little movie shoot. We needed to get some wild foley from him in the back of a car. He didn't really understand, "Act scared." We had to paint a picture for him so we could get the right sounds from him. "Let me hear what it would sound like if a...

    Any hints for directing composers?

There's a HUGE difference between musicians and composers...believe it or not. Just because you know someone that has a keyboard doesn't mean that they can write. Interview your potential composer with the instrument that they will be using. Ask them to play something "tense" or play some...

    Using Untrained Actors

Yep, I can attest to that. I don't really listen to the lines. I listen to the quality of the audio that's fed back (not to be confused with feedback) to me from either the recorder or the camera. I never listen to the direct feed from the mic.

A good shot gun mic for film making..?

One of the big things you have to look at when buying a microphone is the pattern that the mic will pick up. Regardless of the brand, some models will have a very narrow and directional pattern, while others are wider and will pick up more without having to angle the mic constantly. If you can...

    Sound!

Depending on the camera, you can go straight to the audio inputs. I recommend that you get several different lengths of XLR cable. 2 - 25' 1 - 50' ...and a really nice set of headphones.

    Synching typing

You wouldn't need to hide the mic cable if you boom it. Another option is to use a PZM (Pressure Zone Microphone) mic placed just outside the shot, but you might get some unwanted table noise (normal hand movements and the like...). Even a simple lav mic (lapel mic) would pick up what you need.

    What sound equipment to get.

I realize that this is an old thread, but I LOVE audio, so forgive me... You want to make sure that your headphones have a flat response curve. Some headphones are designed to boost the low end or enhance the mids due to the big wave of iPods and MP3 players that compress sound to an...

    Hello people!

I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Lynn and I'm currently doing several indie flicks to get more movie set experience. I'm a boom op/sound tech on set. You can say sound is my life, as I've been doing audio related things as far back as I can remember. I'm also a chilehead who...
