sad about documentaries. I've seen so many great ones lately, Stories We Tell, The Imposter, The Act of Killing, Man on Wire, The Square, just to name a few.

How do you get funding to make a documentary? Is it the same as a film, basically pitching it all over town? Anybody here have any experience getting grants?

What I would say is that for those types of jobs, Alcove, there is lots and lots of competition. You have to know the right people, have a great amount of experience, kiss a lot of butt, etc, etc. In a very true way, you have to be "allowed" to make money like that. But you don't need...

The great thing about doing narrative work is that if you're good at it, you don't really have any competition. Now, that needs to be decoded a bit. Of course there is competition, there has never been more competition, anybody with an iphone and the will to do so can make a movie these days...

I'd actually really like to move to the Netherlands, or Scandinavia in general. My understanding is it's pretty hard to immigrate there.

Is there anyway to make money off a 20 minute short you've done?

I realize a lot of people will scoff at this question, and I'll get a lot of canned answers like "there is no one way," or "lots of hard work." But I'm asking it anyway. What's the best way to start making money making movies?

Is it really only about the hard drives though? Wouldn't processor speed, video graphics card, RAM, and most important, bus speed, come into play here?

10 hours of Kodak 35mm film, which isn't that much footage for a 2 hour movie if you consider bad takes, things that will be edited out, and extra coverage you end up not using, will cost you about $250,000 USD to buy and have developed and scanned. It's easy to say "shoot on film." Not so...

Just in general I'd say less hand held stuff for sure. The 80's was before "shaky cam" became "cool." Also if you're doing any action, use a lot more medium and long shots, use those sticks; unlike today where everything is usually shot super close and fast and you can barely tell what's going...

I'm surprised there aren't more solutions for wireless iris and focus control these days. Some kind of bluetooth app for a tablet would be great for 1st AC's.
